Fall art season has officially arrived, and this may be one of the biggest opening Wednesdays New York has ever seen. With galleries across the city launching their new exhibitions on the same night, we’re breaking things up by neighborhood. Part one takes us through the Lower East Side, Chinatown, and SoHo, with Tribeca getting its own dedicated post in part two.
Our featured artist today is Aryo Toh Djojo, whose first New York solo exhibition, Leap into the Void, opens at Perrotin. Born and raised in the visual intensity of Southern California, Toh Djojo draws from UFO mythology, alien encounters, cinema, celebrity culture, science fiction, and the strange visual language of pop culture. His immersive airbrushed paintings move between the cinematic and the surreal, where spacecraft hover, figures ascend, and familiar realities begin to dissolve.
The exhibition also expands beyond painting with experimental sound works, channeling drone, field recordings, electronic soundscapes, and cosmic frequencies. Leap into the Void is an invitation into Toh Djojo’s particular universe, one where art history, pulp, Hollywood fantasy, and the possibility of something beyond our world collide.
