Labor Day weekend offers a brief moment to catch up on art before next week’s packed calendar of New York gallery openings. From Tribeca to the Lower East Side, here are a few shows worth seeing now, including our featured artist of the week, Caitlin MacBride.
On view at Deanna Evans Projects in Tribeca, The Floor Below the Floor explores archives, architecture, labor, and the hidden histories embedded in everyday materials. Through paintings and wood reliefs, MacBride draws on museum collections, personal memory, and processes of preservation and repair to consider what survives, what gets discarded, and how history is constructed.
Inspired by her early memories of growing up in a house under renovation, MacBride treats the built environment as both subject and metaphor. Layers of paint, wood, textiles, and architectural forms become records of use, revision, and accumulated time.
Before the rush of openings across Tribeca and the Lower East Side, this is one to catch.
